continued thoughts on transcendence (and artistic expression)

Here are some more thoughts on transcendence.

Part of the postmodern condition, in regards to literature, is a skepticism towards looking beyond a text for an author's hidden intent.  In other words, we know that there are always power issues at work so we only ever have the text at hand.  We cannot really ever know why an author wrote what they wrote.  I am wondering what that means for the artist and artistic expression.

If, as the quote at the bottom of my May 30th post expresses, part of the artists experience is to need to leave a mark, then what is the relationship between the artist and a work of art?  Do artists create for the need to create or for what they create or both?  I don't think that it has to be one or the other.  I guess I am just wondering what the process is for the artist.  If there are any creative people out there who would like to talk about their creative process, I would like to hear from you.  I am trying to understand how the creative process connects with our desire to leave a mark or to transcend our current condition.

Pastor Leanne

I am super excited these days to be working and ministering with my wife at Mount Hamilton Baptist Church.  Leanne only started 2 weeks ago and already I am so jazzed to be working with her.  It is awesome.
